So You Think You Can Dance 4 Week 5

It’s the top 12 tonight and rumor has it this is the last week for these pairings. Some I’ll miss and some I won’t, but it’s always interesting to see the dancers working with different partners. Whatever the case, there will be two dances each again tonight, and I heard another rumor that one of them is a style we’ve never seen!

Is Cat wearing an old comforter or what? Weird dress. Joining Nigel and Mary tonight is Mia Michaels. Eh, she’s not my favorite judge to be honest.

Chelsie and Mark
Salsa choreographed by Alex Da Silva
Fuego: Joe Bataan

Well, they both surely look hot tonight. And they danced hot too! Nigel said it was a great routine but said Mark could have relaxed his upper body a bit. Mary said it worked for her and called Chelsie beautiful dynamite. Mia (wearing a ridiculous hat) said Chelsie is so gorgeous she wants to stab her. What? She said there was something awkward about Mark, but it was a great performance.

Comfort and Thayne
Hip-hop choreographed by Napoleon and Tabitha
Can We Chill: Ne-Yo

This was not bad. Comfort did well in her genre and Thayne held his own. Nigel didn’t think Comfort related to Thayne and didn’t see what they added to the routine. Mary said there was no chemistry, but it was just good. Mia said it was a little bit more than good.

Jessica and Will
Contemporary choreographed by Tyce DiOrio
Silence: Unfaithful (soundtrack)

There was something very primeval about this piece, just very organic and gut-wrenching and erotic as Nigel called it. This was the first time that I really loved their dancing. Nigel said it was stunning and that Jessica kept up with Will this week. Mary said it was incredible and one of her favorite pieces ever. Mia said it was like the perfect moving human body art.

Courtney and Gev
Cha-cha choreographed by Anya and Pasha
Don’t Stop the Music (The Wideboys Club Mix): Rihanna

Yay for seeing Anya and Pasha again! Boo for Pasha not getting nearly enough screen time. Wow. Who knew our little Gev could cha-cha like THAT? Sexy and tons of chemistry and loved the choreography. Nigel said it was great fun to watch. Mary said it was magic. Mia said it was fabulosity at its best.

Kherington and Twitch
Krump choreographed by Lil’C
2 Buck 4 TV: The J-Squad

It’s kind of hard for a blonde cheerleader type to be “buck”, but this is actually the first Krump routine I’ve ever kind of liked and actually kind of “got”. And I loved Twitch. Nigel thought Kherington did a “damn good job” and Twitch was great, but didn’t like the last 16 bars. Mary said this is the first time that she really believed in Krump. Mia said it was was dirty and disgusting and stank and buck and several other adjectives and that they killed it.

Katee and Joshua
Viennese Waltz choreographed by Jean-Marc Genereux
Iris: The Goo Goo Dolls

Really lovely. Joshua maybe wasn’t quite as smooth as I’d like, but still a pretty dance. I still love them though! Nigel thought it was a little too bouncy from Joshua, but that was the only thing that put him off. Mary said the lifts were good but the execution of the dancing was not as good as it could have been. Mia said Joshua was a little clumsy and it was not their best and that Katee is a gift to dance.

Chelsie and Mark
Broadway choreographed by Tyce DiOrio
I’m a Woman: Smokey Joe’s Cafe (Original Cast)

They just have such amazing chemistry. This was a joy to watch. Nigel said it was a hot routine. Mary said it was sultry, sexy and bluesy. Mia said it worked and it was a success, but said it showed Mark’s lack of training and technique and she wanted more movement from Chelsie. Whatever.

Comfort and Thayne
Contemporary choreographed by Mandy Moore
A Different Corner: George Michael

I just didn’t believe their characters. I didn’t believe their chemistry. I think Thayne danced very well and Comfort did okay, but this piece was sorely lacking for me especially compared to the other routines tonight. Nigel didn’t feel they connected and it wasn’t danced as well as it could have been. Mary said it wasn’t completely believable. Mia said you can only fake technique so much and if they had a better connection with each other it would have worked.

Jessica and Will
Quickstep choreographed by Tony Meredith and Melanie LaPatin
Bandstand Boogie: Barry Manilow

A cute Quickstep if you can really call it that. Not the best ever, but not the worst either. There was some very un-ballroom choreography in this which was fun, but I’m not sure about the authenticity of the dance. Nigel didn’t like the Quickstep part of it. Mary said it was very heavy and didn’t skim. Mia said Jessica went back to the stiff disconnected insecure place and she thinks Will is tired of carrying her. Mia is grumpy tonight. Sheesh.

Courtney and Gev
Jazz choreographed by Mandy Moore
Standing There: The Creatures

So fun and creative and humorous when it needed to be. Loved it! Nigel said it felt like cotton candy - no substance. Mary thought it was rough and raw and loved it. Mia thought they had a great night tonight and that it was performed well.

Kherington and Twitch
Smooth Tango choreographed by Jean-Marc Genereux
Assassin’s Tango: Mr. and Mrs. Smith (soundtrack)

I love them, but this wasn’t my favorite. I think Twitch looked a little awkward, and Kherington was just going through the motions. Their chemistry just wasn’t really there. Nigel said it wasn’t honest for him and he thought Twitch looked uncomfortable and that they murdered the dance routine. Mary thought the ending was phenomenal and the beginning was great, but the in between didn’t really happen. Mia thought they were very non-committed.

Katee and Joshua
Bollywood choreographed by Nakul Dev Majarah (I think?)
Dhoom Taana: Om Shanti Om (soundtrack)

I wasn’t sure I’d like this, but I loved it. And I don’t know if any other couple could have pulled it off. But it was awesome. Nigel said it was tremendous and a brilliant job. Mary said they were stars tonight and put them on the hot tamale train. Mia said it was great fun, great work, great job and it was awesome to have World Dance on the stage.

My ranking:
Katee and Joshua (Bollywood)
Jessica and Will (Contemporary)
Chelsie and Mark (Broadway)
Courtney and Gev (Cha-cha)
Chelsie and Mark (Salsa)
Kherington and Twitch (Krump)
Courtney and Gev (Jazz)
Katee and Joshua (Viennese Waltz)
Jessica and Will (Quickstep)
Kherington and Twitch (Smooth Tango) (It pains me to put them this far down.)
Comfort and Thayne (Hip-hop)
Comfort and Thayne (Contemporary)

Other than the obvious Comfort and Thayne, I really have no idea who’ll wind up in the bottom 3. Maybe Kherington and Twitch, and probably Jessica and Will even though they had one of the strongest numbers of the night. But I think Comfort and Thayne will be the ones to go home.
