It’s the Top 14 tonight! In the intro, Cat said something about “changing things up”. What does that mean exactly? We’ll find out!
Well, first of all, Cat has a dress that looks like a cross between a French maid’s outfit and a tuxedo. The change up? All the couples dance twice!
The guest judge(s) tonight are Tabitha and Napoleon, along with Mary and Nigel.
Jessica and Will
Jive choreographed by Tony Meredith and Melanie LaPatin
Choo Choo Ch’Boogie: Five Guys Named Moe (Original Broadway Cast)
I think this was pretty good, although it didn’t seem to have bounce to it. They looked heavy doing their steps, rather than light and bouncy. But, it was mostly fun to watch. Tabitha said they were fighting. Mary said there were missed connections left and right. Nigel said Will had a great bounce, but Jessica was too upright.
Comfort and Thayne
Broadway choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler
Cool: Bernstein and Sondheim
I thought Thayne’s part of this had a bit of a Cats feel to it and Comfort’s part was more Chicago. Or maybe I’m crazy. But I thought they danced it very well, and they had chemistry, and I liked them together better than I liked them with their other partners, or at least better than I liked Comfort with Chris. Tabitha likes them together. Napoleon was digging the choreography and he liked Comfort’s flirtiness. Mary liked the partnership and enjoyed the number. Nigel said the aggression wasn’t there and it wasn’t good enough.
Kourtni and Matt
Hip-hop choreographed by Cicely and Olisa
How Do I Breathe: Mario
Matt’s tall gangliness really worked for me in this routine. Their unison was a bit off and I didn’t really buy Kourtni as a hip-hop dancer, but I think Matt did some decent dancing. This was a very understated routine and I did like the choreography. Tabitha was surprised by Matt. Napoleon said it wasn’t good enough. Mary liked it but didn’t feel the passion. Nigel said it was hip-hop on sleeping pills.
Chelsie and Mark
Jazz choreographed by Mandy Moore
Kiss Kiss: Holly Vance
They are such a dynamic couple and they have sooo much chemistry on the dance floor. This was a fun routine, well-danced, well-choreographed. Tabitha said they are always able to tell the story. Napoleon said they have a chemistry together and they perform well. Mary loved it and said they haven’t taken a wrong turn yet. Nigel said it just worked and that they were the first couple with a connection.
Kherington and Twitch
Paso Doble choreographed by Tony Meredith and Melanie LaPatin
Malaguena: Brian Setzer ‘68 Comeback Special
Wow. I could definitely feel the heat and the passion in the dance. Twitch was great and I love him and Kherington looked demanding. Napoleon said the matador in Twitch came out. Tabitha said it was a slow build. Mary said it was full of passion but it was just okay. Nigel said he was very entertained and that Twitch’s shoulders were too high.
Katee and Joshua
Contemporary choreographed by Mia Michaels
Hometown Glory: Adele
Joshua just has such a light in him when he dances, even if it’s a serious piece like this one was. A lot of passion and beautifully danced. Tabitha said they commanded the stage and owned it. Napoleon said they just get it. Mary said it had monumental stillness. Nigel it took complete faith by Katee and complete concentration by Joshua.
Courtney and Gev
Hip-hop choreographed by Cecily and Olisa
Lights, Camera, Action!: Mr. Cheeks
Gev had some attitude and Courtney held her own. Napoleon said Courtney was pretty ghetto but that Gev wasn’t keeping up with her. Tabitha said some of the hits were more bouncy in the shoulders. Mary said it was 50/50. Nigel said it was fun and funky.
Jessica and Will
Lyrical Jazz choreographed by Mandy Moore
Alone: Heart
Okay, Will shirtless. Wowza. Other than the fact that Jessica doesn’t always seem to finish her movements, this was their best dance so far in the competition. Lots of passion and connection. Tabitha said the choreography was clever and that Will has nice lines. Napoleon said that Jessica is holding Will back a little bit and that she is in and out. Mary said it was fire and that it was outstanding. Nigel said it was fabulous.
Comfort and Thayne
Smooth Waltz choreographed by Edward Simon
Hov Arek Sarer Jan: New Age Armenia
I thought it was lovely and they had a very nice connection, but i don’t know if it’s enough to keep them out of the bottom 3. Napoleon said he really enjoyed it and it was beautiful. Tabitha said she sees a nice partnership but she wasn’t crazy about Thayne’s last moment. Mary loved it. Nigel said it was tremendous.
Kourtni and Matt
Mambo choreographed by Alex DaSilva
Ban-Con-Tim: Super All-Star
This was a good Mambo - not a great Mambo. Some of the movements were nice and crisp and some of them not so much. But it was entertaining. Tabitha said she was hot and cold. Napoleon thought it was too smiley and not sexy and sensual enough. Mary said Kourtni was hot but she didn’t believe the chemistry. Nigel thought Kourtni needed to be sharper and Matt needed to be stronger.
Chelsie and Mark
Foxtrot choreographed by Edward Simon
It’s My Life: Paul Anka
Okay, first of all, Paul Anka singing Bon Jovi? Weird. A very good routine, well-danced and some spectacular lifts. I thought Mark held his carriage well. Napoleon said they were a pleasure to watch and they look like they love to dance. Mary said they pulled it off and that it was elegant and classy. Nigel thought Mark was a little uncomfortable and didn’t use his feet as well, but Chelsie was absolutely fabulous.
Kherington and Twitch
Contemporary choreographed by Mia Michaels
Dreaming with a Broken Heart: John Mayer
First Will without a shirt, and now Twitch. This is a good night! This piece has emotion, vulnerability, passion. It was beautiful. And both Mia Michaels pieces have been my favorites of the night tonight. Tabitha said it was awesome x 6. Napoleon said there were so many amazing moments. Mary said it was powerful and dynamic and the story was absolutely believable. Nigel said they were committed to it and couldn’t stop watching it.
Katee and Joshua
West Coast Swing choreographed by Benji Schwimmer
Shake It: Brother Yusef
I don’t know if it was the music or what, but I didn’t really like this as much as I liked the routine that Benji choreographed last year for Pasha and Sarah, which is still one of my all-time favorite routines. They danced it well, but it didn’t wasn’t as dynamic as I would have liked. Tabitha said Katee was on fire. Napoleon loved the character. Mary enjoyed it and thought it was a great routine and that they executed the tough lifts. Nigel said they have the ability to adapt to different styles.
Courtney and Gev
Broadway choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler
New York, New York: Bernstein, Comden and Green
These Broadway routines tonight are authentic Broadway and I love the choreography. This had a Gene Kelly feel to it. The unison parts were slightly off, but I think Gev did a respectable job and they got into character well. Tabitha said it was believable but they didn’t go down enough to make the high point explode. Napoleon thought he found his niche. Mary thought it was great and strong and completely believable. Nigel thinks they are the underdogs and they slip under the radar and that this style is perfect for them.
My ranking
Katee and Joshua (Contemporary)
Kherington and Twitch (Contemporary)
Chelsie and Mark (Jazz)
Jessica and Will (Lyrical Jazz)
Courtney and Gev (Broadway)
Katee and Joshua (West Coast Swing)
Chelsie and Mark (Foxtrot)
Kherington and Twitch (Paso Doble)
Courtney and Gev (Hip-hop)
Comfort and Thayne (Smooth Waltz)
Comfort and Thayne (Broadway)
Kourtni and Matt (Mambo)
Jessica and Will (Jive)
Kourtni and Matt (Hip-hop)
I think the bottom 3 will be the usual suspects.
