So You Think You Can Dance 4 Finale Part 1

Well dance fans, we have come to the penultimate episode of this season’s So You Think You Can Dance. (Don’t you love the word penultimate?) Tonight everyone dances with everyone and tomorrow night we find out the winner. Who will it be? Courtney, Joshua, Katee, or Twitch?

Joining Nigel and Mary at the judges’ table this week is Mandy Moore!

Courtney and Twitch
Hip-hop choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon
Church: T-Pain

Well, first of all, I LOVED this routine. It was funny and crazy and raw and just very entertaining. Courtney has proven time and time again that she can handle hip-hop choreography very well. Twitch was awesome, of course, but Courtney stayed right with him. Good stuff. The game is on! Mandy said it was awesome! Mary said it was a knockout! Nigel said the characters were fantastic, the musicality was great, and it was absolutely perfect.

Courtney dances to They Weren’t There by Missy Higgins.
Gorgeous as always. Courtney has such a great feel for character and for the music. I think she has a very bright future ahead of her! Mandy said she has spirit and soul. Mary said she has taken it on and lived it and fought for everything along the way and she made Courtney cry when she said she was an inspiration to young girls. Nigel said that America has taken her to their hearts and she is a bundle of joy and she energizes everyone around her.

Katee and Joshua
Lyrical Jazz choreographed by Wade Robson
Slow Dancing in a Burning Room: John Mayer

My favorite couple this season. Not my favorite routine they’ve done (that would be last week’s Contemporary), but still I love to watch them together. They have chemistry and passion and it was a joy to watch them dance this season. Mandy said it was beautiful and honest and they were telling a story. Mary said it was absolutely beautiful and they are magical together. Nigel said there were many remarkable things about the routine and that everything that got in the way of emotion was stripped away.

Katee and Courtney
Broadway choreographed by Tyce DiOrio
The Trolley Song: Rufus Wainwright

I would have hated this a little less were it not for the fact that the costumes were totally ridiculous and ugly. HATED the costumes and it really took away from the dance, in my opinion. There were some neat moments, but it was all a little too smiley happy frilly silly fluffy for my taste. It felt like a piece of fluff and not much choreography. Just not my cup of tea. I’m not sure how Tyce goes from choreographing one of my favorite numbers ever (last week’s Katee and Joshua contemporary) to this crap, but there you go. Mandy said it was cute and they looked adorable and that it moved well and they had nice chemistry. Mary said they had great chemistry and they were synchronized and it looked effortless. Nigel said it’s lovely to see the girls dancing as girls. (They didn’t drool over the choreography, though!)

Twitch dances to It Was All in Your Mind by Wade Robson.
Twitch never fails to entertain and I’m so glad to see him in the Final 4. Mandy said there’s something in the way his eyes sparkle when he moves and the fun he has and that it has continued through the entire competition. Mary was speechless about Twitch as a freestyler. Nigel said Twitch has left his mark on the competition and he could watch Twitch’s solos all night.

Joshua and Twitch
Russian Trepak choreographed by Youri Nelzine
Trepak: Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite

I really thought the only thing they should be dancing together was a hip-hop dance-off, but this? This was so much FUN! Loved it! They have the best personalities for a dance-off like this. And the tricks were insane! Great stuff! Mandy said there is nothing more spectacular than watching two men do crazy stuff on stage. Mary said she is excited to have two hip-hop dancers for the first time in the finale and it was one of the most fabulous numbers she has seen on the show with energy and power. Nigel said it will be something that is spoken about for many years to come.

Katee dances to Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap.
I wasn’t sure I’d like Katee after that moment in Vegas when the judges almost cut her, but then she danced and maybe it was because she was with Joshua and he was so cool and funny and sweet, but I grew to like her more every week and I’ve become a big fan! Mandy told her to keep dancing and stay in ballet class and continue to train and work on her artistry. Mary said she will cherish so many of the numbers she has done this season. Nigel said he loves the way she finishes her moves and completes the task the choreographers give her.

Katee and Twitch
Foxtrot choreographed by Tony Meredith and Melanie LaPatin
Feeling Good: Michael Buble

Now, they might get them on technique, but I don’t care. It was elegant and beautiful and that lift was amazing! Twitch has come so far, and for him to be able to dance a Foxtrot is just awesome. Mandy said it was very romantic and the lift was amazing. Mary said the Foxtrot is a gentleman’s dance and Twitch was one cool gentleman and he was nice and smooth and controlled and to Katee, she said “Bravo!” Nigel said there is nothing they’ve thrown at Katee that she cannot do, but that Twitch was a bit too British at first and then complimented the lift.

Joshua dances to (Not Just) Knee Deep by Funkadelic.
I really love Joshua and he is my favorite to win the whole thing. If not him, then Twitch. I want a hip-hopper to win this year! Mandy said he’s smooth and has such charisma. Mary said he rode first class on the Hot Tamale train all the way to the finale. Nigel said he has set the standard for untrained dancers because he has been superb throughout the competition.

Courtney and Joshua
Jive choreographed by Jason Gilkison
The Dirty Boogie: The Brian Setzer Orchestra

Jive is a tough tough dance. Joshua has been so great in the Latin dances that require the hip action and he wasn’t as great in the Jive, but I still think he was good and sold it and Courtney looked hot! It was entertaining with a lot of fun (and very difficult) choreography and that last drop lift was crazy! Mandy said it took a lot of hard work and it was an excellent job. Mary talked about how difficult it was and said they brought it on! Nigel said the end lift was called “around the world” said they got through it, but there were things that he was disappointed with and that it didn’t have the great feel that the Jive has. He said it was tired and it didn’t have the full energy.

Top 4
Contemporary choreographed by Mia Michaels
Hallelujah: The Vitamin String Quartet

First of all, you’ve got Josh and Twitch shirtless and in kilts. Whoa! Then you’ve got the girls dancing almost on pointe in one part. Wow! And all four of them are doing this crazy Irish dancing type choreography and jumping and running and twirling and flying all over the stage. Holy cow! It was pretty darn awesome. Mandy said she was a little bit at a loss for words and that it was magical and a celebration and that they were dancing from a place that was not physical anymore. Mary said Mia did not hold back and that Twitch was a standout in the number and they bonded like a unit and overall she’s proud of all of them. Nigel said the guys were so wonderful to be in the final 4 and be untrained and they deserve to be there and they bring something entirely different. The two girls are shining beacons on the stage. He didn’t fully understand the routine but it showed their athleticism, and no one would complain after seeing that performance.

My ranking:
1. Joshua and Twitch (Russian Trepak)
2. Katee and Joshua (Lyrical Jazz)
3. Courtney and Twitch (Hip-hop)
4. Katee and Twitch (Foxtrot)
5. Courtney and Joshua (Jive)
6. Katee and Courtney (Broadway)

Solo ranking:
1. Joshua
2. Twitch
3. Courtney
4. Katee

So, who will win tomorrow night? Who will be America’s “favorite” dancer? I have no earthly idea. I do really think it will be either Twitch or Joshua, but who knows? I could be totally shocked. I don’t think there has ever been a season where it was so unclear who the winner would be. All I know is that tonight was almost totally entertaining (I could have done without the Broadway routine, sorry) and I love all four of them, so I’ll be happy for whoever wins. But I really really want to see a hip-hop dancer win this year. And either one of those guys deserves it. I’m looking forward to tomorrow night!

I am so sad to see this season end. I was not a fan of Courtney or Katee at the beginning, but they have so grown on me. And the show was amazing. I cried through the whole thing! (Surpise!!) The boys I’ve loved since auditions and I’d love to see someone who has a story win! I’m not allowed to say who I want to win (the curse) so I’ll just say this, “great minds think alike”!lol!
