You’re probably saying that America’s Got Talent is getting great ratings and doesn’t need fixing. But it does. There are some things about it that are very very wrong. And if those things don’t change next season, I for one, will not be watching.
I didn’t particularly care for the show last season, but I wanted to see it through and see who won. This season, I like it even less. I’m only watching it because there’s not really much else on and because there are a few acts I’d like to see win. And I like Jerry Springer as the host. Other than that, I wouldn’t miss it if it was never on the air again.
So how to fix it?
1. Get rid of all the judges and get new ones.
Yes, I said all of them. They are horrible. They put through ridiculous acts. They don’t know good from bad half the time. None of them have any particular talent that I can see and so I wonder why they have any credibility to judge other people’s talent. I mean what have we got? We’ve got a has-been actor who could only sell albums in foreign countries. We’ve got the reality show star wife of a heavy metal rocker. Does she actually have a talent of her own? Don’t think so. And we’ve got a former editor of a British tabloid. And that makes him credible to judge talent because? Last season, they had Brandy, and at least she has some actual talent on her resume. But this season? Zippo. Seriously, get rid of all. of. them.
2. No more British judges.
It is not necessary to have an acerbic-witted Brit on every judging panel of every talent show on television. It really really isn’t. And in this case, it’s detrimental to have foreign-born judges. I mean, really, can you see three American judges putting through the Bollywood dancer and Boy Shakira? I thought not. That might qualify as talent in Britain, but it doesn’t qualify as million dollar talent in America. This is America’s Got Talent, not America’s Got People That They Might Find Talented in a Foreign Country. It’s obvious that America, when they had the chance to vote, didn’t agree with Piers and Sharon about the Bollywood dancer and Boy Shakira. Because America actually has taste. And American judges know what Americans want to see. Not only do the judges have zero talent credibility, they also (other than the Hoff who didn’t want to put those two through) don’t have very good taste.
3. At least get rid of Piers or give him lessons in talking to kids.
Look, I believe that if a kid enters the competition, they need to have a thick skin, because that’s part of being in the entertainment business, and if their parents aren’t going to prepare them to handle constructive criticism, then they shouldn’t let them audition. However, Piers has been a great big jerk to several children and it has. got. to. stop. I’m not saying he shouldn’t state his opinion, but the way that he has spoken to children in the past is unforgivable. And if he talked to my kid like that, well, I’d give him a piece of my mind. If not a smack upside the head.
The one thing they shouldn’t change? Is Jerry Springer being the host. I love Regis Philbin, I really do, but Jerry has done a stellar job this season. And I like him as the host better than I liked Regis. Sorry Reege!
