American Idol 7 Week 6: Ain’t Too Proud to Beg

Tonight’s theme is one of my favorites - songs from the year they were born. Check out the title to find one of mine!

Ramiele Malubay
Alone (1986)

One of my very favorite songs of all time. She started out pitchy on the soft part. And she stayed pitchy on the big part. Not only that, she felt like she was just slightly behind the beat. And how you make this song boring I have no idea, but she did, especially if you compare it to Carrie Underwood’s performance of this song a few years ago. Ramiele may be packing her bags this week, although she is apparently sick.

Jason Castro
Fragile (1987)

This was a good performance, but not a great performance. The song was just kind of boring overall. It was really nice to see him stretch his range, though. Paula had it correct when she said it was safe. At least it wasn’t pitchy.

Syesha Mercado
If I Were Your Woman (1987)

I’ve never actually heard this song before, so I can only judge by Syesha’s performance, which I thought was very very good. A good song choice. She sang it beautifully. Best I’ve heard her sing.

Chikezie
If Only for One Night (1985)

The performance was okay, maybe a little pitchy here and there, but I was flat-out bored with the song. I have grown to like Chikezie, but this performance did nothing for me at all.

Brooke White
Every Breath You Take (1983)

Uh oh, she had to restart the song a couple notes in. That is never a good feeling and it plays with your mind the rest of the performance unless you are really really good at putting it out of your head. I think this was a good performance, but unfortunately (because I love her so) not all that memorable, but better than last week.

Michael Johns
We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions (1978)

The greatest sports anthem(s) of all time. These songs are absolutely perfect for his voice, and although I don’t think he brought a lot new to them, he performed them very well. He really looked like a rock star up there. And much better than the last couple of weeks. My favorite performance of the night so far.

Carly Smithson
Total Eclipse of the Heart (1983)

Carly definitely has the big voice to pull off this song, but I guess what I missed was the grit and roughness of Bonnie Tyler. Carly’s voice is just too velvety for this song. It also felt a little choppy to me, like it should have been more legato or smooth. I just didn’t really get into it.

David Archuleta
You’re the Voice (1990)

Hated the song. The performance was too bouncy. I still just don’t get what everyone sees in him. I’m sure he’ll stick around for another week, though.

Kristy Lee Cook
God Bless the U.S.A. (1984)

I really do love this song, but I’m not sure if it was a good choice for this competition. It was a good choice vocally, though, because she did it well, but it was kind of pageanty. I think it will keep her around another week, however.

David Cook
Billie Jean (1982)

Wow. Billie Jean is not one of my favorite songs, but I actually loved this version of it. He took a cheesy 80s song and made it relevant. And honestly, it just put such a different spin on the song that it gave it a whole new meaning. Awesome. Just simply awesome. He is out-Daughtrying Chris Daughtry. By a long shot. He’s becoming my favorite singer in the competition.

My ranking:
1. David Cook
2. Michael Johns
3. Syesha Mercado
4. Brooke White
5. Kristy Lee Cook
6. David Archuleta
7. Carly Smithson
8. Jason Castro
9. Chikezie
10. Ramiele Malubay

I think Kristy did enough to save herself for another week, and I think because of giving the worst performance of the night and going first, that Ramiele will be the one to go home, but we might shockingly see a David Archuleta in the bottom 3.
