Hoping there’s never too much of a good thing, the Top 11 take on the Beatles one more time.
Amanda Overmyer
Back in the U.S.S.R.
Amanda’s voice is just so unique and so throwback. She sounds so much older than she is and I mean that in a good way. I actually liked her performance better last week, but I still liked this performance a lot. I thought it was a good song choice for her and she should stick around another week.
Kristy Lee Cook
You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away
It started off okay, but then it started getting pitchy. And I like the song, but it was just kind of boring. Maybe it was the arrangement, but whatever the case, it just didn’t work for me. It felt really dated. The ending note was pretty good, though. Better than last week, but that’s not saying much since last week was awful.
David Archuleta
The Long and Winding Road
We all just hope he remembers his words tonight. Does it drive anyone else crazy that he is constantly licking his lips between phrases? Maybe I’m just supercritical of him, but I don’t do that when I sing, so I don’t know what it’s all about. Maybe he needs some lip balm? So, um, yeah, he didn’t forget his words, and the vocals were very good, but otherwise it was a big yawner for me. A little too safe. And still, I don’t get what the big deal is about him.
Michael Johns
A Day in the Life
I think this was a bit of a risky choice of song because it’s like several songs in one and on top of that he had to cut it down to just a taste of the song due to time constraints, but all that being said I think he did a fairly decent job with it. I don’t think he was as bad as the judges thought he was. He still hasn’t had his “moment”, but I really like him and I really want him to have that moment.
Brooke White
Here Comes the Sun
There’s really no way that she could top her performance last week because it was her “moment”. But, she did okay tonight. It was a good song for her sunny personality. There were a few pitchy notes here and there, but it was still a charming performance. The judges didn’t like it, but Brooke took it graciously.
David Cook
Day Tripper
I did like this performance, but it was a little safe and boring (other than the talk box which was pretty cool) compared to the last couple of weeks. But good enough for him to make it through another week for sure. I feel like I’m watching a David Cook concert when I watch him. He just looks like a winner to me.
Carly Smithson
Blackbird
She has such a powerful smooth voice. It was nice to see her do a ballad. It’s not one of my very favorite Beatles songs, to be honest. But she did it well.
Jason Castro
Michelle
Every Michelle out there is swooning. Jason has that same charming quality that Brooke has and that’s why he’s so lovable. This was a good song choice for him if not a bit safe other than the French. Not his best performance but he’ll be around another week.
Syesha Mercado
Yesterday
The timing throughout the song was a little off and awkward to me, but I think this was my very favorite Syesha performance of the competition. It was very heartfelt and a good choice for her. Very well done. If I was voting, she’d probably be the only one I would vote for tonight so far.
Chikezie
I’ve Just Seen a Face
This wasn’t as good as last week - in fact it was kind of sloppy and all over the place, but it was more interesting than a lot of the performances tonight, though, and not bad on the harmonica considering he’d never played one before this week. (And was that the longest sentence ever or what?)
Ramiele Malubay
I Should Have Known Better
She went for a peppier song this week so she wouldn’t be boring, but she was pretty much boring again other than a few nice big notes.
My ranking
1. Syesha Mercado
2. David Cook
3. Carly Smithson
4. David Archuleta
5. Amanda Overmyer
6. Ramiele Malubay
7. Jason Castro
8. Brooke White
9. Michael Johns
10. Chikezie
11. Kristy Lee Cook
Wow. I don’t know exactly what to say after this show. I don’t even really know how to rank them. Basically I really liked Syesha and David Cook was pretty good as was Carly and the rest of them were just so-so. I think Simon was right in saying a second Beatles week was a mistake and I was thinking it before he said it. This was probably one of my least favorite weeks ever other than Syesha. Hopefully from here on out it’s onward and upward. And hopefully, it’s Kristy’s time to go. I think she’ll be in the Bottom 3 along maybe Chikezie and no idea who else. Could be almost anyone. I think I will look forward to next week. I can’t even proofread this tonight because I don’t want to relive it, so I’ll proofread it tomorrow.
Well, Carly was my favorite. She made me cry. I really thought she just sang with so much emotion. And oh my gosh the girl is gorgeous! I liked David Cook and Brook as well.
I hope Kristy goes this week. Please?! She should have left two weeks ago so this must be her night. Or she’s going to be the Haley of this season!lol!
I did see an interview with Simon on Oprah talking about this season. He also talked about the season in which Taylor won and what a popularity contest that was. And that he thought last season was the weakest season. Which I agreed with. It was an interesting little bit if you can catch it on a rerun.
