Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber is the mentor. I love his music. I hope they do it justice!
Syesha Mercado
One Rock and Roll Too Many (from Starlight Express)
She absolutely chose the perfect song for her voice and personality. I think this is my favorite Syesha performance of the competition. I loved it. If she can get past the curse of going first, she should be sticking around another week.
Jason Castro
Memory (from Cats)
This is an iconic song, so let’s see what Jason can do with it. A little pitchy on the low parts. This is a rangy song and not easy to sing at all. This was an interesting song choice and I’m not sure it actually worked, but this is just a tough week for Jason since Broadway doesn’t really suit his vocal style too well. Not his best performance, but I like the emotion he put into it. It was a totally different spin on the song than we usually get.
Brooke White
You Must Love Me (from Evita)
Uh oh. Brooke had to start a song over for the 2nd time this season. Will that be the kiss of death for her? It’s too bad if it is, because I think she really sold the song. I was really worried for Brooke this week, but she got it. She “got” the song and she gave a very good performance, false start notwithstanding. I agree with Paula to a point about starting and stopping, but I understand why she did it. It’s a tough call at that point. Broadway songs are so dependent on the lyrics and if you lose them, you’ve lost the song. But I think she may have sung her last song.
David Archleta
Think of Me (from Phantom of the Opera)
This is my favorite Webber musical and one of my favorite songs from it. He just better not screw it up is all I have to say. I have no words for this other than I HATED IT. The end. He should go home just for desecrating an Andrew Lloyd Webber song that badly. It didn’t sound anything like the song I know. UGH!
Carly Smithson
Jesus Christ Superstar
Andrew Lloyd Webber is a smart man. Carly was going to sing All I Ask of You and he told her to go with her other choice which was this. And this was perfect for her. Much better than the other. I love the other song, but I would much rather hear her sing this and this was one of her best performances. LOVED it. And I loved her outfit, too.
David Cook
Music of the Night (from Phantom of the Opera)
This is my absolute favorite Andrew Lloyd Webber song. And I love David. I hope he doesn’t make me not love him tonight. This was quite a departure for David, but here’s the thing. He sang it pretty true to its form instead of rocking out, but he really showed off his vocal range and prowess. There was a bit of a pop spin, but it was still very much the song I know and love. And he NAILED the big note. So I still love him.
My ranking:
1. Carly Smithson
2. David Cook
3. Syesha Mercado
4. Brooke White
5. Jason Castro
6. David Archuleta
I’m sure America won’t agree with me about David Archuleta, so I expect to see a Brooke and Jason bottom 2 and Brooke will unfortunately probably go home.
And can I just say here how totally jealous I am of them to have been able to work with Andrew Lloyd Webber? His music has been such a huge part of my life. What a fantastic opportunity they got this week.
