American Idol 7 Week 1: The Boys Are Back in Town

It’s the night we’ve all been waiting for - American Idol is back on the air. And tonight, the guys are going to show us what they’ve got. Tonight’s theme is songs from the 60s…here we go!

David Hernandez
In the Midnight Hour

He’s a hometown boy and I do like his voice, but he has some habits that are kind of annoying. But he really does have a powerful smooth voice. And for a change, the mix is awesome. The last notes were not exactly pretty, but still, an overall good job and a good way to start.

Chikezie
More Today Than Yesterday

He started off very pitchy. He has a cockiness to him that is kind of annoying. And maybe he’s not cocky, but his demeanor seems cocky to me and I don’t like it. The vocal was okay, but I don’t think it was that memorable - kinda boring really. It kind of felt like I was watching a bad imitation of Carlton Banks (from Fresh Prince of Bel Air).

David Cook
Happy Together

He was a bit pitchy, but I liked the edge he put on the song. It wasn’t spectacular but I enjoyed it. And he’s a likable guy.

Jason Yeager
Moon River

I love this song, but it’s kind of an odd song to choose I think. It’s really old-fashioned and he didn’t really do anything to it that made it stand out. It just felt really old-fashioned and kind of loungy. Not my favorite.

Robbie Carrico
One (Is the Loneliest Number)

I think he really chose a good song. It showed off his range. It fit his personality and his voice. And so far, it’s my favorite performance of the night.

David Archuleta
Shop Around

There have been a lot of teenagers on the show and the problem that seems to crop up is that their performances look like a high school musical type of thing (and I’m not talking Zac Efron here). I thought he pretty much stayed away from that although there were moments here and there when it felt like it was going to slide into that. However, he has some amazing vocals and some charisma and I think he did a great job. Good choice of song. Lots of fun and very memorable. Definitely the performance of the night to this point.

Danny Noriega
Jailhouse Rock

I’ve not been a fan of Danny, so we’ll have to see if he can win me over. He’s just too “pretty” and a little too effeminate for my taste. The vocals on this song were…okay. At least when I closed my eyes. And if you’ve never heard Elvis. The dancing needs to go bye bye, though. He hasn’t won me over yet. Especially not by doing an Elvis song. You just don’t mess with Elvis. Just. No. Does he remind you of Phoebe Cates? Cuz he totally reminds me of Phoebe Cates.

Luke Menard
Everybody’s Talkin’

He has such a sweet high range. I don’t think he did enough to stand out, but I did like his performance. And loved that last note! Maybe not the best song choice, though.

Colton Berry
Suspicious Minds

Another Elvis song. It’s really really hard to do Elvis songs and do them justice because Elvis is so iconic. They tell the girls not to sing Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston and I think they should maybe tell the guys not to do Elvis. That being said, it was okay vocally. Not great but not horrible. I couldn’t watch him too much either, though.

Garrett Haley
Breaking Up Is Hard to Do

He reminds me of someone. Haven’t figured out who yet, though. Tracy Nelson? That was a very sultry performance from a 17 year old. The voice is not sultry, though, a bit nasally tonight, but I think he has room to grow. There were some pitch problems here and there. I’m not sure if it was memorable vocally, but he does have pretty eyes.

Jason Castro
What a Day for a Daydream

I’m really not into dreadlocks, so that’s a strike against him, however, he has gorgeous eyes, so that might make up for the dreadlocks. Maybe. I love that he had the guts to play an instrument, though. He picked a great song and he had fun with it. I love his voice and I could listen to it over and over again (and I will after I buy it on iTunes tomorrow). My favorite of the night at this point in the competition. I forgot about the dreadlocks while listening to him sing. He has a fan in me.

Michael Johns
Light My Fire

Michael was my early favorite going into the competition, so we’ll see if he stays there after his performance tonight. He has a Cliff Richard look and vibe to him for me, although tonight I felt like he really was channeling a bit of Jim Morrison. Loved it. Love him. Definitely one of my favorite performances of the night. He has charisma and really draws you in.

So, we’ve finally got a chance to really hear all the singers, to learn a little of their personalities, and I’ve started to pick out my favorites. Here are my rankings for the night:

1. Jason Castro
2. Michael Johns
3. David Archuleta
4. Robbie Carrico
5. David Hernandez
6. David Cook
7. Luke Menard
8. Garrett Haley
9. Jason Yeager
10. Colton Berry
11. Chikezie
12. Danny Noriega

I think anyone in the bottom 5 or so could be gone. I really think that Jason Yeager will be gone, and that’s unfortunate because I think he is more talented than some of the other guys that will probably stick around.

Be sure to check iTunes tomorrow for any of the songs that you want to keep forever and ever.

And one last little note. Josiah Leming got cut so we can listen to Danny Noriega and Colton Berry? Puh-leez. I’d rather listen to Josiah than almost anyone that I heard tonight (besides Jason Castro and Michael Johns).

My top four are the same as yours except I have numbers one and two switched.
And so funny about Danny. I watched the first half of the show alst night with Bubba and I said “It isn’t too bad, if you close your eyes. What is it about him that bugs me?” And Bubba said “He wears girl pants and has a girl haircut!”lol! So, we get the effeminate thing too.
He was not my least favorite though. That award goes to Moon River guy and his creepy look and his kid who looks JUST as creepy! Ewwwwww!!!
