Day 110: Church Festival

Flags and Clouds

Festivals, carnivals, state and county fairs. Somehow there is a sameness, an oldness, a nostalgia to them that never seems to change. The rides might get flashier and the prizes certainly change with the whims of pop culture, but there are still hot dogs and sno cones and cotton candy. There are smells and sounds and lights and colors. And those things never seem to change. It’s like a peek into our past…and our future as well I like to think. Because even though the technology of it all might change, we can still imagine our parents and our grandparents and our children and our grandchildren experiencing the same things we do. It’s a piece of Americana that just doesn’t seem to go away or to change all that much. And that’s a good thing.

A few more pictures of our church festival can be found here.

This looks so sad to me. I appreciate the black and white, but to me so much of the carnival atmosphere is the color and lights. Mark says that looking at this picture makes you hear the Merry-Go-Round, but in a tinny and slightly out of tune way…

I love your commentary on this - you’re right, festival, canival, fair - no matter what it’s called and how it changes, there’s a sameness and connectedness in the memories.

I agree with Marlene, though - there’s a bit of loneliness in the b&w, but a great shot nonetheless. :)

Oooh, I love the use of B&W here. It gives it a timeless look, plus a whole different feel than it would have had in color. I think the B&W makes this spectacular. Good job!

I love the B&W, too! Makes it a 50’s carnival! Beautifully done.
