Day 53: Work in Progress

Plywood

First of all, I have to tell you I didn’t have my camera all day and I didn’t take this picture, but it was taken with my camera at least.

My husband is doing some remodeling of the choir area at our church while the carpet is being replaced and that is what he was working on in this photo which was taken by our drummer, who was helping him along with S, who is the other guy in this photo. Mike had the camera with him all day because he was taking photos of what he was doing before the plywood went in.

There is much more to the story in that what was supposed to happen was that the carpet was supposed to come out this week and Mike was going to get the choir area remodeled this week. We were going to have mass in the church this weekend on concrete flooring and the new carpet would be installed next week. However, the best laid plans…

Our drummer decided to go exploring in the attic while helping Mike earlier this week and found some trusses that were broken and/or loose. Which explained why the ceiling has been sagging. That in turn led Mike to look at the roof, which was also sagging. A sagging ceiling is one thing. A sagging roof is a much much bigger deal. So now the church can’t be used until the roof is shored up. Which won’t happen until next week and there probably won’t be mass in it until the roof is fixed, which most likely won’t happen for a few more weeks after that. If we’re lucky, we might be back in the church by Easter. But we probably won’t have carpet.

The roof is sagging in the back of the church, and the altar and choir area are in the front of the church, and since Mike is not doing anything that causes vibrations, he’s allowed to continue his work.

So, anyway, that’s the story behind the picture. J, the drummer, was standing on the steps to the font when he took this. I liked the perspective of the shot.

Day 51: Electric Cloud

Lightning

My original plan for tonight was to take a picture of the lunar eclipse, but the clouds had other ideas and obscured the moon from view during most of the eclipse. Instead, we took pictures of the lightning, something we don’t often see in the winter.

Day 50: Soar

Raptor

I heard Melody on the back porch barking like crazy at something, but I ignored her. Then I heard a sound that could only be one thing - the screech of a hawk. As I might have mentioned before, Melody does not like hawks at all. They sit up on the power pole at the corner of our back yard and screech at her and she gets pretty irritated. Anyway, I looked out the French doors in my bedroom and sure enough there was the hawk perched on the power pole. I ran to get the camera and then took a few shots as the hawk sat up on the pole looking down at me. I knew that sooner or later he or she would take off, so I determined that today would be the day I finally got a picture of the wings outstretched. I leaned back against the wall and waited with the camera at the ready. Of course, it was really hazy out so there is not much detail in the picture and there’s no way I could even tell what kind of hawk it is, but it’s a step in the right direction!

And here’s a bonus shot Mike took of LG when we stopped by church on our way home from Target. She got some new sunglasses from the dollar section and she thinks she’s really stylin’!

Gazania

I guess I’m a little fascinated with photographing the Gazanias right now. So here’s another one. I’ll try to post something different tomorrow!

Project 365 Topic #8: Tiny

Time to break out those macro lenses/settings. This week your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to notice the tiny things in the world around you and share them with us. This week is all about noticing things that we might otherwise overlook. But small can be beautiful, too!

Gazania

We got the Gazanias at the nursery on Valentine’s Day. I always thought there were called “ganzias”, and that seems to be what a lot of people call them, but their name is actually “gazania”.

Day 46: Chocolate Cake

Chocolate Cake

This chocolate cake I made for Valentine’s Day is really really good. Really. Really really. Really really really. Especially when you haven’t had chocolate in a few months. I’m not supposed to have any caffeine, you see. But there is this cocoa that is 99.7% caffeine free, so whenever I have the ambition to make something with it, I get to have chocolate. Did I mention how much I love chocolate? And how good this cake is? It’s really good. Make it. You’ll see.
