Day 34: (Not Quite) the Only Game in Town

The Only Game in Town

The Super Bowl was played mere miles away from our house tonight. It’s kind of interesting to think of all the famous people that were in town for the event (from Ryan Seacrest to John Travolta) and to realize that we could have driven past the stadium if we had really wanted to. And also if we hadn’t been at mass. Someone has to do music on Super Bowl Sunday after all, and since Mike is paid to do the 6 pm mass, that’s where we were.

Since I didn’t have much choice in the matter, I didn’t feel really guilty that I had my cell phone set up on my music stand with ESPN up and auto refreshing the score every few seconds. It seemed like a pretty boring game if you were just watching the score not change for 3 quarters, but I’m sure it was much more exciting than it appeared by looking at the score. We got home with just over 9 minutes left in the game and from there on out it was non-stop excitement.

I wasn’t really rooting for either team. I love the underdog, so there was that angle, but a perfect season isn’t something you see very often, so that would have been cool, too. However, after Eli Manning shook off what seemed like the entire defensive line and made the pass to Tyree who made an incredible catch, well I sort of felt like they deserved to win. That was pure desire right there.

As a parent, I can’t imagine how the Mannings feel tonight. One son won last year and the other wins this year. How often does that happen? They must be so proud of both of their sons and so happy for them, too.

The photo is of the front page of today’s special Super Bowl section of our local newspaper. I’m really proud that our next door neighbor, Glendale, could host the game and that it was one of the better Super Bowls in recent memory, but I have to admit that I’m glad that the 24/7 Super Bowl coverage is finally coming to an end.

And, by the way, the title of the post refers to the fact that there was a big golf tournament (the FBR Open - used to be known as the Phoenix Open) going on here as well. Lots of sports. Lots of excitement. And a little bit of rain.

If you’re a Giants fan, congratulations on a major upset. If you’re a Patriots fan, what can I say? Immortality was in their grasp and it slipped away. That’s gonna hurt for awhile.
