This morning the three of us went to Wildflower Bread Company for brunch. To keep Little Girl entertained, Mike drew a picture of a keyboard on a napkin and here she is “playing” it.

It rained all day today, but tonight while I was cooking dinner, I happened to glance up and out the window and saw this. We all ran outside to see it. It was actually a full rainbow, but I couldn’t get far enough away to fit it all into my lens. A photograph really can’t do it justice, though. It was beautiful.

The more I experiment in the kitchen, the more interesting things I learn about the chemical reactions between different foods and/or ingredients.
Tonight I made a pepperoni pizza and to add a little extra kick, I put some crushed garlic on top. But when it came out of the oven, the garlic had turned….green?!? So I went to my friend google, and found out that:
Food for Thought: “Science: Green Garlic Working on a pasta sauce recipe for an upcoming issue, test cook Erika Bruce noticed that fresh garlic cloves sometimes take on an odd blue-green shade when cooked with acid (tomatoes, in this case). Under acidic conditions, isoallin, a compound found in garlic, breaks down and reacts with amino acids to produce a blue-green color. Visually, the difference between garlic cooked with and without acid can be dramatic, but a quick taste of the green garlic proved that the color doesn’t affect flavor.” From America’s Test Kitchen Newsletter, September 2004
You learn something new every day. By the way, it tasted great, but next time I’ll probably saute the garlic first. ;)

This was taken in the gym at the high school where we direct the student masses once a month or so. I liked the juxtaposition of the flag above the cross above the sign saying to keep off the floor.
And with this photo, I am one quarter of the way through the year. When I started this project, I wasn’t sure if it would be easy or hard or frustrating. Sure, there are some days when there aren’t too many photos to pick from or I have to scramble around and take a picture of “something” before I go to bed, but in general, I’ve found this to be a very rewarding experience. It’s taught me discipline. It’s taught me to look for photo ops everywhere I go. It’s making me a better photographer. And I’m looking forward to the next 274 days. :)

It’s a bit chilly here, so we’re all just trying to stay warm!

Every year I make Little Girl a “Memory Box” to put mementos in throughout the year. Today I made her 2007 box and also one for Mike to save things in should he choose to do so.

Usually on Sunday night we have Panda Express for dinner, but Mike “wasn’t in the mood”. He wanted Fazoli’s. But I wasn’t in the mood. So instead we had calzones from Luna Pizza. Yum.
